Spain

Chartering a yacht in Spain allows you to experience modern cities, bustling resort towns or quiet nature experiences.

As the Spanish coast dives into the Mediterranean, the prolongation of the Betic Cordillera rides between ocean basins and it emerges, with extraordinary beauty, as the Balearic archipelago. The Major Gymnesia (Majorca), and the Minor Gymnesia (Menorca) are the two largest islands. In the south, there are Pine Islands, Ibiza and Formentera. Each of these islands, floating serenely in the glittering Mediterranean, could be said to have their own theme.

Mallorca is the senior island, combining a little of everything, from spectacular mountain scenery and hiking through to the coastline of pristine beaches. Ibiza is the definition of clubbing, the island that gave Europe the rave, but without forgetting its turquoise waters.

Menorca is a haven of tranquillity – splendid isolated beaches and coves, and prehistoric monuments standing as taciturn reminders of how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

And tiny Formentera, a chill-out island, where some people lose themselves for the entire summer, needing little to keep them happy other than white beaches and luxury yacht sunset parties.

Due to its strategic placement between Africa and Europe, Spain was developed by different cultural and artistic influences of several civilizations such as the Celtics, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, Visigoths and the Romans. Thanks to these influences, Spain is the third country with the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage designations.

Spain used to be one of the cultural centers of Europe for thousands of years, so it has extraordinary artistic heritage. Some of the world’s most prolific artists were born in Spain, like Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí, and many more.

Another important part of Spanish culture is its stunning architecture, ranging from Gothic cathedrals to Gaudi’s modernist sculptures in Barcelona. Music is also a significant part of Spanish culture – the classical guitar was invented in Andalusia and Flamenco music & dance is Spanish national symbol.

Today, Spain is one of the most visited countries on the planet, renowned for its fantastic beaches, easy-going and friendly people, lots of sunshine, delicious food and beautiful scenery, which make it the perfect sailing destination.

Although Spain is relatively small, it has an incredible variety of culinary traditions. One ingredient which is the essential part of Spanish cuisine is olive oil and olives. Spain is the world’s leading producer of olive oil, and there are literally dozens of different varieties, incorporated in almost every dish, even in desserts.

Other most commonly used ingredients are tomatoes, potatoes, saffron, paprika, tuna, cod, and cured ham. The Spanish national dish is paella, a dish made with rice, saffron, vegetables, chicken, and seafood cooked and served in one pan.

There are certain things that everyone associates with typical food in Spain – tapas (savory appetizers made of bread and toppings) and late-night dinners. Since Spain is surrounded by sea, seafood is also an integral part of its gastronomy. In fact, the famous Spanish city Madrid, is home to Europe’s largest fish market.

When you’re on a sailing vacation, don’t miss out on typical Spanish breakfast food like Churros (deep-fried dough), Tortilla de patatas and Café con leche – Classic Spanish coffee.
